Evaluation Learning Series 2019-2020

The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's Results Division, in collaboration with the Canada School of Public Service, has launched a 4-part series to address strategic evaluation issues for senior evaluators, managers and directors. The series aligns with the recently announced evaluation specialist competencies.

As required by the competencies, the evaluation community should support departmental evaluation planning by:

  • analyzing program and departmental risks and understanding performance information needs
  • assessing and proposing strong rationales for evaluation coverage choices
  • identifying user and utilization-focused evaluation products

  • The Key Elements of Strategic Communication in Evaluation

    As evaluators, we must ask: do stakeholders care about evaluation findings? Are they interested?

    The third event in the series will focus on strategic communication, including how effective written and oral communication can affect successful negotiation and "getting heard."

    Effective and strategic communication is not just about having a well-written final report. The evaluation community should continue exploring innovative ways to share their evaluation findings that go beyond the standard written report, with new tools: storytelling, photo stories, webinars, video, etc.

  • The Key Elements of Strategic Conduct in Evaluation

    The second event in the series will provide the federal evaluation community with approaches to ensure high-quality, credible and useful evaluations. Through facilitated discussion and activities, participants can garner insights on effective and efficient research methods, on leveraging existing evidence, and on strategically formulating findings and recommendations.

  • The Key Elements of Strategic Planning in Evaluation

    The first event in the series will provide the community of federal evaluation directors, managers and senior evaluators the opportunity to navigate through core concepts in strategic planning of evaluations in a practical manner.

    The focus will be on key elements such as effective planning and management, prioritizing issues and policies, and program and stakeholder engagement.
