The School is pleased to invite public servants to the third instalment of Marquee Moments, our series on historical milestones in the Public Service of Canada. This event features a panel discussion of the events of September 11, 2001, and their implications for Canada.

On that day, the Government of Canada took immediate action to counter threats and to safeguard Canadians and international travellers. Communities in the country rose to the occasion to meet the needs of passengers on flights diverted to Canadian airports, and the public policy measures enacted as a result are still in many cases with us today.

Join us to hear from some of the senior public servants who had key responsibilities on that day and on the days that followed. Learn about what it was like for them after 9/11, the repercussions on domestic and foreign policy, and how Canada would be forever altered.

The 2008 Financial Crisis

The School is pleased to invite public servants at all levels to the second instalment of Marquee Moments, a new series on historical milestones in the Public Service of Canada. This event will examine the financial crisis of 2008.

The collapse of a major American investment bank in September 2008 marked the beginning of a sharp decline in confidence in the global financial system. Many countries were pushed into recession, with lower employment levels and household incomes. But although this was the worst global economic recession since the Great Depression, Canada was able to weather the storm and mitigate its effect on the country.

This panel will explore the origins of the financial crisis, the conditions in Canada before it happened and the government policy responses that allowed Canada to persevere through this challenging period. Join us to hear what we learned and how we can keep such a crisis from happening again.

The Syrian Refugee Resettlement Initiative
The Syrian Refugee Resettlement Initiative

The School is pleased to invite public servants of all levels to the launch of Marquee Moments, a new series on historical milestones in the Canadian Public Service. This first event will focus on the Syrian Refugee Resettlement Initiative.

In 2015, as part of the Syrian Refugee Initiative, Canadians welcomed Syrian families to be resettled across Canada. Since then, almost 50,000 Syrian refugees have been resettled through government assistance and private sponsorship.

Join us as we examine how the Public Service response unfolded. Our panel will lead you through what it took to implement the Resettlement Initiative: from mobilizing teams and working with international partners to process refugees, to collaborating among federal, provincial and municipal government departments and service provider organizations to coordinate settlement, language training, housing, and employment services, all on very tight timelines.

Panellists will share successes, lessons learned, and stumbling blocks encountered along the way. Hear the inspiring story of how the Government of Canada and everyday citizens opened their hearts and mobilized resources in a way that can only be described as 'Canadian'.
