Urban Inuit Experiences

Description

Colonization is a relatively recent experience for Inuit in Canada. While most Inuit live in one of the four regions of the Inuit Nunangat, approximately 30% now live outside of their traditional homeland. Many Inuit in the urban South are only the second or third generation of their families to live in these cities. Other Inuit are finding that they must temporarily leave the North to access medical care, education or other services.

Few supports are available for many Inuit in urban settings, and very few culturally appropriate resources. What can be done to address these challenges? How can we create culturally safe environments? Join us to learn more as our speakers share their lived experiences as Inuit women living in Winnipeg and Halifax.
