Why we Should Listen to the Experts
Today, the internet, television news, and social media provide the greatest access to knowledge the world has ever known. But are we really smarter as a result? One effect of knowledge at our fingertips is an erosion in the belief in experts – professionals with comprehensive and authoritative knowledge and experience in a specific area. Why does this matter?
On May 8, 2018, Mr. Tom Nichols will explore the decline of expertise in the public discourse. Mr. Nichols is a professor of national security affairs at the U.S. Naval War College and the Harvard Extension School (and a 5-time undefeated Jeopardy! Champion). His talk will examine the need for qualified experts to advise political leaders and the value added of expertise in evidence-based policy and decision making.
