[00:00:07] I'm Liz McKeown and I work on digital strategy at Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Previously I was at the Canada School of Public Service, influencing the design and delivery of content to become a more digitally mature public service.
[00:00:20] Here at IRCC, we're developing, implementing and evolving our cloud target operating model, with an emphasis on how we need to support the cloud needs of our organization in a more sustainable, proactive, predictable and deliberate manner. Part of this is about explaining the cloud business proposition. In other words, how is the cloud good for government business? There is a massive and rapid shift away from bricks and mortar infrastructure in data centres, recognizing that our systems have become more costly to maintain, more complicated to make changes to, and have limited our ability to redefine our business processes.
[00:00:57] Furthermore, I suspect that many of you have observed a few changes in your world over recent years. Many of your program needs are now IT enabled. Your clients are demanding easy, accessible services that continuously evolve to meet their needs and to address broader changes around us. And we have a lot of data coming from our programs and services that can influence our solution designs. So in steps the cloud.
[00:01:21] To a business or product owner, the cloud brings three key opportunities. First, speed and flexibility in designing and implementing services and solutions. Without the need to purchase and maintain hardware, cloud computing allows for improved workplace flexibility as employees can access applications and data on a remote server offsite, anywhere and at any time, as long as they have internet access. Furthermore, there is little to no start-up funding required. The benefits of this agility include greater innovation and productivity.
[00:01:55] Secondly, the cloud brings scalability on demand or elasticity. The cloud provides the ability to scale up and down based on business demands, meaning that your organization is only paying for actual usage and needs. Scalability also allows you to be more responsive to your clients' needs.
[00:02:13] And thirdly, let's talk security. Updates can be completed more quickly and efficiently, including those that are security related, such as patching and applying fixes to emerging security vulnerabilities, leading you to focus on your business. Just one of many security advantages brought to you by the cloud.
