When onboarding new employees that are new to role, organization, or department, it's important to connect with those employees early and assure them that you understand that they will need time to ramp up.

We've all started positions in new departments where it is quite natural to feel lost and alone for the first while until you have a bit of time to adjust to the new reality. It's a very stressful time for employees who are trying to learn, to fit in, to prove themselves to colleagues and to the new management team.
In light of this I have often met with new employees and shared my 3, 6, 12 timeline rule when starting a new job. The first 3 months is to get a sense of the job and the people; the first 6 months is to try to start feeling a level of comfort within the new role and organization; and, a full 12 months to go through the business cycle to live through the full extent of the responsibilities of the job, so that you can be in a better position to anticipate and respond during the next cycle.
I've had positive reactions from employees who feel frustrated within the first couple of weeks on the job and feel reassured when I meet with them and tell them that I expect them to have time to adjust to the new job. Most employees are harder on themselves, than we as managers would ever be, so it is important to let them know that we support their learning journey and that we don't expect them to be at 100% on day one.
