We see examples of this all the time.

Cases where data is either not being used, it isn't usable, or isn't being acted on.

And the old saying about how what gets measured gets managed, only works if what is being measured is actually manageable.

The good news is that there is a growing community of people like you, who are actively learning how to do better with data.

You're putting those big picture strategies, policies and commitments into action by:

gathering and sharing data responsibly;

analysing data in new ways, with new tools, to uncover insights and inform decisions; and

applying data to stay focused on achieving results for those you serve.

My name is Chris Valiquet and I'm director of the Government of Canada Data Community at the Canada School of Public Service. With the support of 25 departments and agencies, our small team is dedicated to supporting the growing community of data practitioners and leaders like you.

So whether your work involves advanced analytics, data visualization, information management, program delivery, corporate services or business intelligence, my message today is that you are part of a diverse and dynamic community.

No matter where you or your organization are today, I encourage you to commit to increasing your own data literacy and proficiency levels.

Connect with the community, learn from it, and contribute to it.

Even though you won't learn everything you need to know in a single conference or course, if you integrate learning into your work, you'll be on the path to improvement.

Learn about using the right data collection methods and standards for the job.

Learn about data sharing and unlocking potential of open data

Learn about data science and the jobs can, and cannot, be done by robots

Learn about data for smarter performance measurement and program evaluation

Learn about data ethics and participatory methods of gathering and using data

If you aren't already signed up, join our mailing list and we will send you a monthly newsletter to help keep up with all the events, new releases and even job opportunities around the data community.

Keep learning. Keep connecting. Keep improving.

Thanks for watching.
