Innovation Scorecard

The scorecard is divided into sections that assess strategic fit, opportunity, desirability, feasibility and viability.

Purpose

Use this job aid to assess an idea by assigning a score to each criterion. The best idea is developed further.

Desired outcome

Several ideas assessed against the scorecard. The idea with the highest total score is best suited to be developed further.

When to use

At the ideation and conceptualization stage of the design process, to assess the ideas generated during brainstorming or other ideation techniques.

How to use

For each idea, go through the statements on the scorecard and assign scores to the idea. Refer to your team or organizational data and documentation for supporting evidence.

Innovation Scorecard components

Strategic fit

  • Organizational identity:
    • Alignment with the organization's identity, considering mandate, strategic direction, and culture.
      • Rating scale: 0 (no alignment) to 5 (perfect alignment)
  • Innovation guidance
    • Alignment with the organization's innovation guidance.
      • Rating scale: 0 (no alignment) to 5 (perfect alignment)
  • Leadership support
    • Support from at least one key executive who can help the idea become a reality.
      • Rating scale: 0 (no support) to 5 (full support)
  • Opportunity
    • Expected positive impact of the idea on core users and other stakeholders.
      • Rating scale: 0 (no impact) to 5 (high impact)

Desirability

  • Team's belief in the idea's positive impact on core user segments.
    • Rating Scale: None, Very Weak, Weak, Moderate, Strong, Very Strong
  • Positive impact of the idea on core user segments by solving a problem or fulfilling a need.
    • Rating Scale: 0 (no impact) to 5 (high impact)

Value proposition

  • Team's belief that the value of the idea will resonate with user segments.
    • Rating Scale: 0 (no resonance) to 5 (high resonance)

Feasibility

  • Team's belief in having the necessary capacity, enablers, technologies, and resources.
    • Rating Scale: 0 (inadequate) to 5 (sufficient)
  • Team's belief in having the right capabilities to handle critical activities.
    • Rating Scale: 0 (inadequate) to 5 (sufficient)
  • Understanding of stakeholders who could help develop and deliver the idea.
    • Rating Scale: 0 (limited understanding) to 5 (comprehensive understanding)

Viability

  • Team's belief that the idea will positively impact the organization's mandate and long-term plans.
    • Rating Scale: 0 (no impact) to 5 (high impact)
  • Team's belief that the costs for implementing and delivering the idea will be within the approved budget.
    • Rating Scale: 0 (exceeds budget) to 5 (within budget)
  • Cost-Benefit Analysis: Team's belief that the potential benefits will outweigh the costs.
    • Rating Scale: 0 (low benefit/cost ratio) to 5 (high benefit/cost ratio)
