On January 30, 2018, the Government of Canada endorsed the United Nations Decade for People of African Descent (UNDPAD) and committed to learning more about issues specific to Black Canadians. This commitment provided a vital framework for addressing long-standing inequities and improving research, data collection and policy development to support the well-being of Black communities in Canada. On February 7, 2024, Canada further cemented this commitment when it announced it would extend the UNDPAD to 2028 to provide more time to take concrete actions.

In partnership with the Black Executives Network and the Federal Black Employee Caucus, this 3-day conference will bring together government officials, community leaders, and subject matter experts to explore government policy issues, priorities and program themes related to Black communities in Canada. While the conference will reflect on the commitments under the UNDPAD, its broader focus will be to foster alignment of internal government efforts with the lived realities and needs of Black communities in Canada.

Conference objectives:

  1. Foster collaboration and innovation to help policy-makers and public servants develop strategies to address systemic and anti-Black racism and its impact on the public service in a more informed way.
  2. Equip the policy community with insights and perspectives to enhance their capacity to design and implement inclusive federal policies.
